What to Wear? A Guide to Mom’s Wedding Attire

An upcoming wedding is a huge occasion for an engaged couple, one which will require them to dress appropriately and give them an opportunity to shine.  The same is true for the mothers of the bride and groom.  Many mothers look forward to their child’s wedding and revel in the idea of planning, shopping and celebrating with them.  Moms also want to look their best for their son or daughter, family and friends, so their wedding attire selection sometimes becomes a major concern. However, mothers of the bride and groom don’t have to stress over their dress. Here are a few basic tips for moms to consider when shopping and selecting their attire:

Dress according to the formality of the event – For formal weddings, moms might choose to wear a floor length gown, for semi-formal weddings, a pant suit or two-piece dress, and for casual weddings, a knee length dresses.

Dress according to the time of year – Wear lighter, more breathable fabrics like cotton or linen for spring and summer weddings and heavier weight fabrics like velvet or satin for fall and winter weddings.

Consult the bride on color and style – The moms probably don’t want to clash or match with the bridesmaids so ask the bride for her input on the wardrobe.

Dress appropriately for your age and not too sexy – There are plenty of two-piece, classic, conservative types of dresses for moms out there, and if that is normally your style, then go for it.  But if your style is more edgy and contemporary, a strapless or one shoulder gown can give you the look you love without looking too provocative.

Try to stay away from white or ivory color dresses – White and ivory are colors for a bride to wear.  If neutrals are your favorite, go with tan or beige instead.

Shop sooner than later – Give yourself plenty of time to find a style that’s right for you by visiting multiple stores and trying on lots of different styles.  It’s also a good idea to shop early since a gown may need to be ordered and you may need extra time for alterations.

Mothers of the bride and groom don’t have to stress over their dress. Shop with the bride to get her input, plan ahead and have a color and style in mind, for fun and easy shopping trips everyone will enjoy.
