| What to Wear and Not Wear for the Rehearsal Dinner
Brides can feel confident that they’ll look radiant and elegant on their wedding day because they’ve carefully selected their hairstyle, make-up, jewelry, dress and shoes, but how many will feel that put together the night of their rehearsal dinner? Many brides don’t know what to wear for their rehearsal dinner. What to wear will depend on several factors like the time of year, where the dinner is being held, and the casualness or formality of the event as determined by the host, usually her future in-laws. Not everyone has the same definition of casual or formal but from backyard BBQs to more elegant affairs, here are some rehearsal dinner wardrobe suggestions. |

Spring/Summer Parties
Put your jeans away for casual outdoor parties like garden parties or BBQs. You can be just as comfortable and stylish in a crisp cotton floral sundress or a ruffled blouse with Bermuda shorts, Capri pants or a high waisted skirt. Add straw or cork heel sandals, a raffia tote bag, sunglasses, and a scarf to complete the easy, breezy look.
If you’re dressing for dinner in a restaurant, you can wear a button down or belted denim dress, a bohemian looking maxi dress, or linen trousers paired with a draped or embellished blouse. Accessories like a pinstripe blazer, straw clutch bag, chunky jewelry and wedge heeled shoes add the extra style needed for a night on the town.
For spring or summer semi-formal cocktail parties at a country club say, knee length dresses in chiffon, silk, tulle or lace in pastel or neutral shades are always a big hit. You can never go wrong with the little black dress either, just chose one in a fabric that is suitable for warm weather. With this type of look, add an oversized cocktail ring or fabulous bib necklace to really shine. |

Fall/Winter Parties
Looks to consider for dinner in a restaurant during colder months are turtleneck dresses, wrap dresses, long skirts with sweaters, and the always fashionable and in-style boot cut trouser in fabrics like tweed. Pair any of these looks with boots, a tweed fedora and fall’s hottest new accessory, the cape, for a sophisticated, polished outfit.
Semi-formal cocktail parties in colder months don’t call for a ball gown but for dresses in rich fabrics like velvet or satin, fuller style skirts, adornments like feathers, and crystal embellishments. Satin and lace pumps and a quilted leather bag with chain strap will have you looking and feeling beautiful. |

Keep in mind that you will most likely be in some sort of religious institution for your actual wedding rehearsal prior to the dinner party so avoid extremes like fitted mini dresses you’d wear to a club, super short skirt lengths, too much jewelry, too much make-up, too high of heel. Also on this list of no-no’s is bustier or corset tops, crop tops, t-shirts, cut off shorts and tanks. And keep the gym clothes at home; no hoodies, sweatshirts or sweatpants, yoga pants, loungewear or anything terry.
Once the location and style of the rehearsal dinner are set, try on a few different combinations of separates to put together a look that is appropriate, ask your fiancé and friends for their opinions, then choose the outfit that best fits your definition of style. |
