Tux Trends

Tuxedos have been the quintessential formal dress for men for over a century.  The basic elements of the tuxedo have been pretty consistent through the years; a satin peaked, notched or shawl lapel, single or double-breasted jacket, trousers with a satin side stripe, a pleated wing or laydown collar shirt, a satin cummerbund and bow tie.  Yet, there are always some trends from contemporary fashion that spill over into the men’s formalwear sector that reflect our desire to be current and cool.  Here are some notable tux trends from the past and some of our favorite tux trends to look for in 2010.

Baby blues, greens and browns were popular tux colors in the 1970’s and were worn with ruffled front formal shirts.  Bright colors of Miami inspired the pink and purple shawl collar jackets of the 80’s.  The 1990’s marked the beginning of the 3 to 4 multi-button tuxedo craze and the reintroduction of the longer length zoot suit tuxedo.  For spring and summer 2010, here are a few of our favorite tux trends:

Narrow lapels – Tuxedo lapels come in peaked, notched, or shawl styles.  Tuxes for spring 2010 are featuring narrower lapels reminiscent of lapel styles of he 50’s and 60’s.

Color – Although black is the most popular color choice for tuxedos, gray is becoming a popular color choice for warm weather weddings.  Hues of gray and silver also look great paired with spring’s “it color” in bridesmaids’ dresses – turquoise.

Pinstripe – This subtle detail gives a lighter feeling look to fabrics perfect for spring weddings.

Distinctive Accents - Lapels with an embroidered braid trim or pant legs with beaded striping down the sides create striking yet simple accents.

Breakthroughs in Comfort – Even the best traditions need an update!   Modern microfiber fabrics that are ultra soft are now used for formal shirts and smartly designed and constructed tuxedos and accessories featuring uniquely fitting armholes and collars make you look and feel your best.

So, that’s our list of which 2010 tux trends are hot.  Rent tuxedos from your local formalwear specialist with these elements to have the most up-to-date look for your spring wedding.  Some may argue that the classic tuxedo is black and worn with a black cummerbund and tie; and although that’s always fashionable, always flattering, some men prefer to give a modern update to this traditional favorite.
